This political cartoon is about the
Roosevelt Corollary, and uses exaggeration, labeling, irony, and analogy. The
exaggeration comes from the size of Roosevelt, who keeps the two groups of
people away from each other. The two areas of land are labeled USA and Europe. A
rolled up scroll is held in Roosevelt’s hand, reading, “Arbitration” This
references the fact that Roosevelt is an arbitration for the western
hemisphere. The analogy comes from Roosevelt’s big stick being labeled, “The
New Diplomacy” It is ironic that a stick would be diplomatic, because it is
meant for crowd control. The cartoonist’s position is that Roosevelt arbitrated
between the western hemisphere and the Europeans. Other people believed that
some of Roosevelt’s actions subdued the western hemisphere. I agree with the
cartoonist that we helped settle many disputes and protected littler countries.
